Story
To Commemorate the 75th anniversary of operation "Market-Garden", also known as The Battle of Arnhem, John Wood & Paul Brindley have decided to help to try and raise funds for The Parachute Regiment & Airborne Forces Memorial Fund by carrying out a parachute jump onto the former 1st British Airborne Divisions dropzone at Renkum Heath, Holland. It was from here than the Airborne Troops set out to capture and hold the Arnhem Bridge until relived by Allied ground forces advancing from the South. The parachute jump will take place from a C-47 Douglas Dakota aircraft, which is in it's own right a veteran of operation "Market-Garden" as the aircraft flew in both paratroopers and supplies over the 9 days of action, suffering damage due to low level flying and repaired bullet hole strikes can still be seen on the aircraft today. John and Paul have this year already completed a 5 jump parachute course to enable them to take part in this historic even which commemorates of of British Airbornes finest hours. Against all odds the British 1st Airborne Division held off a vastly numerically superior enemy force for 9 days when the original plan only called upon them to hold 2-3 days. In the end the relieving ground forces were unable to achieve the very difficult task of linking up with the Airborne Forces and the survivors were ordered to withdraw back across the Rhine river as best they could. Of the 10,000 men who took part in the operation only 2,500 managed to get back to safety leaving 7.500 either killed, wounder/captured and just a handful being hidden by the Dutch Resistance or patriotic Dutch civilians. The reputation of the British Airborne Troops in those 9 days has been upheld by subsequent generations of our Airborne Forces right through to today's serving soldiers. What General Montgomery said of them 75 years ago is as true today as it was then...
