Story

Jon's story

Having completed a successful 24 year career in the Royal Navy and picking up his dream job with Babcock International, life was on track with the family moving into their forever home at the end of last year being the final piece of the puzzle. Jon is very passionate about all sports and is a keen and high-level sportsman having represented Hampshire Rugby at junior level going on to represent the Royal Navy. A good golfer with a handicap of 10 having played for RN Air Command.

On 31st March this year Jon was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease after suffering increased loss of strength and muscle twitching in his left arm. Motor neurone disease (MND) is a progressive, life-shortening neurological condition that affects the brain and spinal cord. It causes the motor neurones, which control movement, to degenerate, leading to muscle weakness, stiffness, and wasting. There's no cure for MND. Due to his condition deteriorating Jon, along with his wife and two daughters, are facing the heart-breaking reality of having to move out of the their family home to manage the challenges that come with living with this debilitating disease.

All monies raised from the swim will go towards managing Jon's ongoing healthcare issues including any specialised equipment he will need in the future along with making some very special memories whilst he still can.

The challenge

Arwen (11), Jon's niece, along with his mum, Rose, will be swimming 5k (200 lengths) at Bridport Leisure Centre on 12th October. BLC are supporting us by kindly donating the pool time. Arwen wanted to do this for her uncle Jon as follows:

I want to raise money for my uncle Jon because it's a hard time for him now and we want to give him the life he deserves before anything worse ever happens to him. The money will help my uncle, my auntie and cousins live better in the future. Due to his MND uncle Jon sadly finds it hard to work and move about so the money we raise during the swim is used to buy small mobility vehicles like wheelchairs and is sometimes used to buy other things as well . All the money you give us, helps uncle Jon a lot and just know we are very thankful

We aim to raise £2000 for disability support and help make lasting memories as a family.
