    Story

    Hello Folks,

My name is Jorge Salazar and I am a 23-year student who arrived at Edinburgh almost three years ago.

This summer I carried out a volunteering program in the Eastern Ugandan city of Iganga. It was an amazing experience I will never forget however, I left with the feeling that there was much more I could do in order to create an impact in the community.

My placement was Goodwill Nursery school, where about 300 kids whose age ranges from 3 to 6 years old, receive their education, which plays a crucial role in every human being´s live.

Nevertheless, the conditions at school were far from acceptable. Things that we consider granted in developed countries, were a genuine luxury good. For example, black boards, chalk, rubbers, pencil sharpeners (they use razors instead), notepads, textbooks, jumping ropes, balls, TOILETS, ELECTRICITY OR TAP WATER.

I believe that, despite the environmental and social differences, all human beings are the same. Yet, absolutely nobody has the chance to achieve a certain level of personal development and realisation without a proper education and the means to obtain it.

Since the beginning I felt extremely identified with what they do at Goodwill, so I promised to Rebecca and Fred (Goodwill owners) that I would raise money when coming back to Scotland, in order to enable them to provide better education to the kids within the Iganga community.

Every single human being deserves a better chance than having to share a rubber with 50 classmates, having a latrine instead of a proper toilet or not being able to see their notepads properly when sunlight is not bright enough. Hence, if you want to do your own bit in order to change the world, help me to fundraise the money that would buy a better future for the guys and girls of Iganga.

After a brilliant volunteering experience this summer, I want to keep cooperating with my project coordinator who runs an NGO in Uganda and the owners of the school I was working at. The project aims to provide better education and opporrtunities for the Iganga community.
