    Story

    Supporting Joseph through his rehabilitation

Earlier this year, Joseph was just like any other normal 12-year old, playing football, rugby, Xbox, hanging with his friends and generally enjoying his young life.

After several trips to his GP with leg pain, and a visit to the local hospital, his parents received the devastating news that Joseph had Osteosarcoma (bone cancer) and needed to start extensive chemotherapy immediately.

The initial sessions of chemo did not shrink the tumour and on 19th August Joseph had his lower left leg amputated. After a week recovering from the operation, he was straight back into chemo and this is currently on going.

Through all of this Joseph has been an absolute inspiration. A brave, cheerful little guy supported by wonderful family and friends and, of course, his best mates who constantly visit him both at home and at hospital.

He still has a long road ahead with chemotherapy stretching into 2020, but when his treatment is over Joseph aims to be back on the sports field as soon as possible. As part of his recovery and to help him achieve this goal, his wish is to have a blade. The NHS has limited funding for this type of prosthesis so the costs will need to be financed by his family, ongoing fund-raising activities and donations.

It's with great sadness I now have to make a final update before this page closes. After some more tests we have been told that the cancer has now spread to Josephs brain and there is nothing more they can do for him. We will now make the short time he has left with us the best we can and would like to thank everybody for their support.

Joseph had two 6 week CT scans to check the remaining 9 nodes in his lungs and both came back ok so things were looking positive then the third scan this June showed 3 of the remain 9 had grown in size which will mean another major operation to remove them in Sept. We continue to get so many messages of support which we thank you all and Josephs friends remain close to him and keep him unto date in the teenage world. He hits his 14th birthday on the 5th August and we all hope his 14th year is better than his 13th. Kind regards to you all

Joseph has now been given his first NHS prosthetic leg which he will have to visit the limb centre to practice with it before he can take it home. He found it difficult and emotional at first but they are confident with practice he will soon be able to walk without crutches.

My donation is from money I raised for my Camps International trip to Peru with Alsager School. My trip has been cancelled due to Covid. Really hope Joseph gets the blade and his operation goes well.
