I have recently made a friend who is homeless, his name is Gus and he is wonderful, kind and intelligent 23 year old. I met Gus when he would sit across the road from the restaurant I work in and since meeting him I've tried to help him out in small ways. Buying him a meal, getting him something to drink or giving him money for a room to stay in. Gus was very unfortunate in the way he became homeless, he had an abusive step dad and a sick Mother who recently passed away, leaving Gus homeless again after getting back on his feet for a couple of months. Unfortunately, he hasn't received help from the government but has been helped by Helping Hands. He tells me that his housing has been pushed back so he's out there on the street every day and every night being abused. This includes everything- being spat on, kicked, thrown at, abused verbally and even urinated on. I can't imagine who would ever do these horrible things to a helpless and vulnerable human being. I want to be able this young man before it's too late... Gus suffers with depression, being beaten down further everyday, and each day is a new challenge trying to fight the demons within himself as well as those around him. Something needs to change for him and all of those people that are left to the street with no one to pull them out. This is why I will be raising as much money as possible via the Great South Run 10 mile for Helping Hands Portsmouth and help turn lives around.
