    Story

We are a group of friends (Brenda, Damian & Joy) who after visiting the “Smiling Coast” of The Gambia in May 2016 and enjoying the delights of the land, sea and warmth we received from our Gambian friends, both young & old, and in our day to day activities over a period of 2 weeks, fell in love with the natural beauty and tranquil surroundings. From visits to local markets, businesses and schools, we felt compelled to give something back to our new friends; so what better way than to support one of their local schools. Having spent a few hours with the teachers and young children (3–13 yrs) at Aunty Dorricings International School, we decided that as we all like to cycle as a hobby, why not take on an event where we can get our family & friends to support us in helping those who are less fortunate than ourselves. Think about it, we here in the UK take literally everything for granted. These children were in awe of the pens, pencils, rubbers, papers and footballs – from enjoying the delights of a simple sweet, every child’s dream came all at once from the generosity of what was donated. Imagine the scene, little faces smiling at the stranger who had taken the time to inquire what they would like to do when they grow up. From simply looking at themselves on a camera/iPad screen, our little friends were so warm and endearing, each with a passion to learn, which every child deserves to experience.

So with that in mind, on Saturday 10 to Sunday 11 June 2017, we will be riding throughout the night with London Nightrider over a course of 31 miles from Lee Valley Velo Park (the Olympic Park) through Central London with our goal to raise at least £1,200 to help the school to enable the children to learn. They require additional classrooms, modifications to their library layout in preparation for the books we've donated throughout the year. Currently the Nursery block consists of corrugated material that needs to be replaced, as well as repairs to the roof.
