Weʼve raised £80 to fund the repair of classrooms in projects supported by Karibuni Children, by 12 self-funded volunteers who travel to Kenya on 6th February.

    Story

Karibuni Children is a small registered charity in the UK (1044872) which punches far beyond it's weight and 95% of the money donated is used for the purpose it is given - we are very mean here in the UK!
We support children in 15 projects across Kenya in both urban and rural slum areas of total deprivation. The children (and by extension their carers) are supported from nursery through to them having a qualification and skill to support themselves and their families. We walk with them through primary, secondary and college or university education.
Three Trustees visit every year at their own expense and meet with the children and young people and all involved with them.
Every two years or so, we take a work party to live and work alongside the local people and do physical work to improve the conditions at the projects - a life-changing experience for us all! Everyone pays their own fares and costs - no funds raised for the children is used for the volunteers. The cost of refurbishment and repair is borne by Karibuni; by crowdfunding I am hoping to raise some of the money needed so that we still have enough to continue our feeding, education and health care with these very vulnerable, but keen and enthusiastic children.
The more we raise, the more we can achieve in Kenya!

The workers are all back from Kenya and, although they were one person short on the team (sadly I had a stroke a short time before they flew, so was in hospital when they went!) they did a wonderful job. the classroom is now watertight with a new roof and windows and brightly painted newly-insulated and lined walls and ceiling. The children are delighted and are even happier to be at school, and their teacher is over the moon! Thank you to our donors, and to the five hard workers - none had been to Embakasi before so everything was new.

Thank you to all those who have donated - and in anticipation, those who are thinking of donating! You are great! It's hotting up for the travellers - only 3 weeks until we fly and suddenly it seems there's still a lot to do - visas, last injections, sun cream, etc, sorting out clothes for a hot climate (thinking about joining the next work party to avoid this damp, grey weather?). But Kenya had very poor rains last season and the next rains aren't due until 15th March, so think about the farmers and those who depend on growing their own food.

Happy New Year to all my family and friends Just had another donation - thank you Sue, Lucie and David, Jo, Holly and Archie! We're on the way to getting the materials we need at Embakasi and Njoro for the children in those projects. We've already got loads of T-shirts, dresses, school uniforms, underclothes, (they call me 'the knicker lady' every January at church!)pens, pencils, balloons and bubbles. We still need those boards for the walls and ceilings and paint, etc - please help before we go. PS Loom bands went down well in 2015 & 2016
