Raising funds for Juanell's School Expedition to Borneo in 2019

The funds raised on this page will go towards my daughter's 4-week school expedition to Borneo, Malaysia, in August 2019. This trip is an amazing way to volunteer to work on projects that will have a life-changing impact on the local communities in Borneo. On this expedition she will stay at a number of camps in Borneo and experience a variety of accommodation styles and also use true Bear Grylls techniques during the expedition. The camps are in the heart of the communities and wild life reserves with whom they will work with local people who have grown up there. It will be hard and labour intensive work, as well as a gruelling trek through the jungle, but the hard work will be rewarding and an experience of a lifetime.

PROJECT SOLUTIONS she will be involved in: (1) Building school kitchens to provide schools with facilities such as teacher accommodation and kitchens; the welfare of teachers and students is important, with the kitchen often providing the only meal a child will eat that day. (2) Building kindergartens to improve early years education to reduce the amount of children falling behind. Many children will leave school during the harvest to help their parents farm the land. (3) Reforestation programmes aimed at replenishing forests ravaged by commercial deforestation as well as providing communities with crops of their own. (4) Community toilet block installations, as many homes don't have their own toilet facilities so Camps International provide villages with clean and modern toilets, reducing hygiene and healthcare issues. (5) Building bridges across rivers enabling children to gain easier and safer access to school. (6) Beach clean ups as an unimaginable amount of plastics and waste ends up on island shores. They collect the rubbish for women's groups who turn it into beautiful jewellery that they can then sell.

This expedition is run by CAMPS INTERNATIONAL and in 2017 they celebrate their 15 year anniversary. During this time they have: (i) Completed over 90,000 weeks of volunteering, (ii) Planted over 1 MILLION trees since 2003, (iii) Run expeditions across 10 countries on 4 continents, (iv) Helped protect 100,00 hectares of wilderness in 6 of the world's biodiversity hot-spots with their conservation projects, (v) built and renovated 50 houses across the world since 2010, (vi) and positively impacted on the lives of over 105,000 people.

Camps International supports rural and indigenous communities around the world to improve their living standards. They focus on improving access to proper education, training, and healthcare. They also work to secure fresh and clean water as well as shelter for those most in need.
