Weʼve raised £348 to neuter cats in Lesbos

Funded on Thursday, 8th December 2016

    Story

Eighteen months ago I visited Lesbos for the first time. It’s a beautiful place. It is also overrun with cats. I quickly realised that the problem they have is not so much a lack of food, but the fact they are not neutered.
As a result of all the fights for mating rights, a lot of the cats had horrible wounds and abcesses – which go untreated, leading to much suffering.
In trying to help some of the worst cases, I found two women running sanctuaries for cats and dogs, and they agreed to help me.
Now, we plan to carry out two neutering programmes for the Lesbos cats, the first at the end of this month and the second next spring. You can check out the charity concerned here: http://www.eresosforanimals.com/ and on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/EresosForAnimals/?fref=ts.
Their vets have agreed to do the operations cheaply - 25 euros for a male and 35 euros for a female, and every fifth cat free! Please support us with whatever you can afford. Thank you!

EreSOS in Lesbos got off to a great start with the neutering programme - and then last Monday they were hit by disaster... a landslide of mud and water overtook the sanctuary and destroyed half of it, including vet medicines and food. Anja managed to get all the dogs to safety, but they are now deep in fixing everything for the dogs. The cat neutering and health check programme will continue - in January. This is the last day of my crowdfunding, and I'm nowhere near my target! Please help me to nudge it a little closer if you can! Thank you

Thank you for the latest donations - with your generosity we are getting there! An update today from EreSOS for Animals: "Last Tuesday we took 14 cats for neutering (11 females, 3 males). Next week Tuesday/Wednesday we will catch and bring another around 20 cats." The neutering will reduce the pressure on the cat population, both for food and over mating, and taking them to the vets is a great chance to give them a health check too and any treatment they need. Ultimately, it will be a smaller, healthier (and happier) cat population

Sorry for the upsetting photo. This poor cat like many others we saw had a horrible burst abcess, probably caused by fighting over females. We did get some antibiotics into the food we gave him, but without having it every day, or having the wound cleaned, it's impossible to know if he would have recovered or not. With our neutering programme any cats we trap will get the vet treatment they need as well as the snip.
