On the 25th February 2009, after a long and heavy labour, our beautiful baby daughter Wiktoria was born. After returning home from the hospital, Wiktoria appeared to be a healthy and happy child however; after a few days anxiety began to take control, spawning a torrent of constant crying. When we approached the Doctors they all gave the same diagnosis – Wiktoria had colic. Despite being told that this would disappear in time, the reality was very different. In the early stages of her life, after being admitted to hospital; thorough tests revealed that there was a perinatal stroke. We were completely shocked by this news. After being directed to a neurologist, floppy muscles and psyco-motor delay was found in our daughter. At this point, we started Wiktorias rehabilitation exercises. Unfortunately, the exercises had to be stopped on many occasions due to reoccurring urinary infections. At the age of just 5 months old, a number of seizures led to Wiktoria being referred to the Department of Neurology. And that’s how our fight with epilepsy began. The type of Epilepsy Wiktoria suffers from is called Lennox-Gastaut syndrome. Wiktoria will never be able to live a normal life, we have made incredible progress thanks to the rehabilitation she has received. The pressure is extremely testing but each small step gives us power and hope of a better, happier future for our beloved Wiktoria. Wiktoria needs to be rehabilitated every day in order to advance her recovery and improve her quality of life. Our great dream is simply to see our daughter walking around without any help so that she can feel the gift of freedom that self-reliance offers. Every day, Wiktoria is fighting to get better but her body is still resisting. The Doctors are confident that she has a good chance to improve, but it will require hard work and constant exercise.
