    Story

We are Tom, Mike, Jake and Finn and together we make up the 2017 British Junior Gliding Team. Later this year we will be representing Great Britain at the 10th FAI Junior World Gliding Championships in Pociunai, Lithuania. But we need your help! Hauling equipment around Europe and competing at a World Championship is not cheap. The more we can raise, the better our chances of bringing home the medals. Anyone who donates £20 or more can also get their hands on one of our exclusive t-shirts!

The JWGC will see the best under-26 glider pilots in the world fighting it out to become the next Junior World Champion. Reigning World Champion Tom Arscott and team mate Jake Brattle will be competing in the Club Class, with Mike Gatfield and Finn Sleigh in the Standard Class. For 14 days, up to 100 gliders will race around gruelling cross-country tasks of up to 500km together at average speeds of over 100 km/h, with the fastest pilots receiving the most points each day.

To achieve success at the highest level requires incredible consistency, tactical awareness and close team work. We will need to practice regularly as a team to gain as much experience racing and working together as possible. We have therefore put together an intense schedule of training weeks and competitions throughout the spring and summer.

However, the team need your help! We face costs in excess of £3000 each to pay for fuel, road tolls, ferries, insurances, camping fees, and of course the flying! Every donation helps! The more we raise, the more we can train and the better facilities we can get access to. For those able to give larger donations please do get in touch and we can discuss what we can do for you in return. Whether it be a ‘meet the team’ event or a day of flying with the team. We are very keen to visit as many people as possible to spread the word.

Andy Davis' XC Course - Nympsfield At the end of April, Finn and Jake spent a week training at Nympsfield under the experienced eye and guidance of double world champion Andy Davis. The two pilots gained a huge amount of practise, gaining more than 15hours flying time each and both had a coaching flight with Andy to get some feedback on what aspects of their flying is going well and where they can improve. Tom and Mike arrived for the second weekend to team fly with Jake and Finn and help put on a bbq for Nympsfield members to help fundraise.

All the gliders are fit for flight and, apart from a few tuning jobs to do on them, are ready for racing! The team have been making the most of the recent good weather in Southern England to get some practise in. British Team Easter Training Camp - Lasham The team were all present except Mike who was busy flying high and fast around the Spanish Pyrenees! Finn, Tom and Jake flew three out of the four days practising and racing over Oxfordshire and Wiltshire as well as some very scenic racing along the South Coast. Huge thanks to Lasham!

It's Annual Inspection and ARC season, Tom's glider is well under way (pictured). Mike's was finished last week and Jake's begins next week. Finn has already completed the inspection on S1. We are very close to the beginning of the season and cannot wait to start flying!
