    Story

In May 2017, I will be joining the Think Pacific Foundation on their expedition to the Fiji islands to help rebuild communities, enforce education in schools and most importantly work with the children and families in the most rural and poorest villages on the islands and support them in bringing them out of poverty.

    Who are Think Pacific?
The Think Pacific Foundation aim to fund, support and maintain sustainable solutions to poverty issues within the different islands in Fiji. The charity aim to rebuild communities in poverty by providing access to fresh water and proper sanitation as well as offering education and extra curricular activities to underprivileged children in rural schools.

    Why Fiji?
Over 250,000 people in Fiji live in severe poverty, with many more living just on the poverty line. Delivering efficient healthcare, education and other social services across all the islands is proving extremely challenging for the Fijian Government.
In February 2016 a devastating cyclone hit the islands which destroyed over 200 schools. Our aim is to help rebuild and repair damage to these schools as well as provide funding for school resources and sports equipment.
The youth who live in the rural Fijian villages have very little work opportunities and prospects and therefore the community have seen a rise in crime and drug abuse. By investing in Fiji's youth and providing a decent education and extra curricular activities we can increase the opportunities for future generations.
As well as this, only 50% of the Fijian population have access to safe drinking water which is leading to sickness and illnesses and putting pressure on local hospitals.

    What I will be doing?
I will be teaching english, maths and many other subjects in an underprivileged primary school as well as running extra curricular sports programmes. I will also be living with a traditional Fijian family with no electricity or hot water in order to immerse myself in Fijian culture.
