    Story

I have been teaching Geography at Dover Girls Grammar School for the last 9 years and taking year groups to the river Dour which runs through Dover. This river is one of only a handful of chalk streams left in the world. It forms a rare habitat for many flora & fauna in the local area but is under threat from many areas such as pollution, litter, and construction. ‘Our Finest Dour’ is a charity organisation that aims to raise awareness about this 4mile river & not only train volunteers & organise clean up groups, but also engage with childrens groups to educate them on the wildlife the river supports, and how it can be sustainably managed. Running the London Marathon this year (thanks to my fantastic running club Jellylegs Deal) has enabled me to support a local cause & give something back to the River Dour after many years of greatly enjoying travelling its length with my students.

I met today with Richard from Our Finest Dour group & his colleague & we walked to the site that the funding will go towards. The plan is to increase biodiversity & to vary the depth of a section of the river that has been channelised for years to allow the water to flow more naturally & encourage wildlife back within the river itself and along the banks; also in the same section in Kearsney to put up information boards & fund some local group conservation education sessions & clean ups - please find an image below of the area.
