In 2010, my mum Karen moved from Essex, UK to a little old town called Dickens in Texas, USA in pursuit of a new life. Since moving, she has faced and overcome many personal obstacles. However she has persevered with incredible strength and unending kindness, and with the help of wonderful friends and her adoptive Texan family, she has settled well into a beautiful home with her beloved dogs.

Unfortunately, as a result of her experiences and circumstances, she has been unable to afford health insurance at any time since moving, so has not been able to access regular medical care.

In November 2019, when some unexplained medical symptoms became unbearable, Karen attended hospital with a suspected infection in her digestive system, and was sent home with antibiotics and pain relief. A week later, she was rushed back into hospital and it was determined she had been misdiagnosed. Her IUD had caused pelvic inflammatory disease in her fallopian tubes, which had gone unnoticed until it caused the collapse and shutdown of her digestive system. She underwent life-saving emergency abdominal surgery and at this time remains in hospital in recovery.

She is now faced with the prospect of paying an unknown amount in medical costs for her hospital treatment, with no means to pay it. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated to help this amazing woman who has done so much for me and everyone whose life she has touched.
