Story
We are the largest community led sports club in the county of Shropshire. We field around 420 players, including 4 senior male teams, 1 senior female team and nearly 300 Minis & Juniors, including several micros. We started from very humble beginnings in 1962, our HQ was based at the Black Horse public house at that time. Then, in 1970 our original founders, 3 of which are still members today, managed to negotiate a good price on the Bull public house in Bridge Street and so this became our club house and remains so today.
Our 1st team is now playing at national level, against towns and cities such as Doncaster, Scunthorpe, Derby, Bedford and Banbury. Given the population of our town is around 12,000, we are definitely reaching for the stars. As is so often the case with success, there are difficulties along the way, not least coping with the fairly inadequate facilities in that our club house is not really fit for purpose, having insufficient changing rooms and showers for the volume of players who now form part of our club. Also, the catering arrangements are woefully inadequate at our Club House, which is actually located a 5-10 minute walk from our 1st team pitch. Also, our pitches are spread out geographically, because of the volume of Minis and Juniors, such that the youngsters play on a local family's previous farming land, some 2 miles away from the club house. The picture shows this land. In an attempt to keep our existing players and to attract more players to the game of rugby, we need to invest in better facilities and ideally this would take the form of a new Club House, specifically built as recommended by the RFU and to include a function room, to enable us to hold fund raising events, making Bridgnorth Rugby Club sustainable for decades to come.
