I am going to spend this summer volunteering in South Africa. I will be working with children and local communities in the townships to give them the opportunity of experiencing sport and the great benefits this will bring to their lives. I am funding the trip myself, but need to raise a minimum of £500 which will be spent in the local communities and will go towards giving these children a better start in life.
Currently, in South Africa, sport in not on the national curriculum and so the voluntary work I will be doing is one of the only opportunities the children will get to take part in sport and team games. Sport is a privileged activity in ‘select’ schools, and not available in most schools in the townships. In the UK, sport is a normal part of the school week and we take this opportunity for granted, including the wider social and personal benefits it brings. By helping children in these townships in South Africa, it also helps give children a break from the tedium of the classroom, so they can enjoy themselves and have fun, whilst encouraging them to grow in confidence and learn new skills. It also helps to opens doors into further education and jobs. The fundraising element of my trip is a huge part of giving these children the best opportunities we can give them.
I am going to swim 5 miles at the end of December which will hopefully encourage you to donate to improve the opportunities for these children.
