    Story

    Hello Everyone,

As some of you may know, in 2008 my beloved mumma, at the age of 49 suffered a cardiac arrest. She was sleeping at the time, and so by the time anyone noticed, the extensive damage to her brain had already begun. I tried my best to do CPR, and eventually the amazing paramedics took over and after a long down time managed to get her heart started. Her brain however, would never be the same.

We spent a turbulent 6 months in hospital, taking each day as it comes, but eventually she was stable enough to be transferred to a more permanent place of care. At this point it was deemed any further recovery was very unlikely and that rehabilitation was futile given the extent of damage. We accepted this, and concentrated on trying to love her as best we could.

Her needs and condition have not changed over the last 10 years and she still requires extensive amounts of specialist nursing care just to maintain her and reduce her suffering. She is unable to communicate, follow any commands, and is still dependent on a tube to get all her nutrition, hydration and medications. In addition to this she has Severe spasticity and contractures in all her limbs, which make movement painful and requires ongoing therapy

The CCG carry out yearly reviews to check that needs are still being adequately met, and this year, they decided that she is no longer eligible for the funding she receives. I know, both professionally and from reading every bit of law and legislation that this is a wrong decision, but unfortunately the system is making it very difficult to be heard.

I completed and submitted an extensive appeal disputing every error in the brief report they completed, but unfortunately they are stating that we need to go through the protection of court in order for them to even read the appeal! In the mean time we are being charged £1500 a week for my mum to remain where she is. No other alternative solution has been offered, as the social worker has stated that she doesn't think anywhere else can meet her needs. This leaves us in an impossible situation.

I know as a professional, who contributes to these meetings for other patient's similar to my mum, that this is a completely wrong decision. I have tried going through all available channels, but it has been obstruction after obstruction.

This money, is firstly to fund a week or two of care, and secondly to get the order from the court of protection to push the appeal forward.

I am doing this, not only for my mum, but for all those vulnerable people she represents.

Any money left over will be donated to Headway, a charity that works with brain injury patient's and their families.
