Mathews is from a small town about 45 minutes drive from Lilongwe the Capital City of Malawi. I met his dad when I was working in the local community hospital. His dad is the theatre cleaner/porter there, and is the only member of the wider family to have a job. Mathews excelled at school and managed to get into the (very competitive) medical school, the first member of his family to to beyond secondary education. His wider family were able to collect the funds for the pre-medical year (1 of 6) but then could not meet the ongoing costs.

We have collectively managed to fund the next three years of his medical school. The money we raise pays for his fees, some books/stationary, his accommodation and a contribution to his food.

Mathews is now about to enter his 4th Year of Medical School. He's done so well in all of his exams often getting merits.
