Story
Scott Abbruzzese was just 14 years old in August 2012 when was first diagnosed with Osteosarcoma (a rare type of bone cancer) after he got injured playing his favourite sport rugby.
He has been battling the disease for the last 4/5 years and has had 3 relapses. He had surgery to remove the 1st tumour and replaced his humerus bone in his left arm in December 2012. Then major surgery to remove the 2nd tumour on his spine in April 2015 where he spent several months in rehabilitation having to learn to walk again.
Scott was still in the process of recovering in December 2015, when routine scans showed the tumour had returned on his spine, this time Doctors confirmed surgery was not an option and recommended he had chemotherapy to prolong his life.
Through his mother’s determination and research and together with his consultant Scott underwent intense chemo & radiotherapy and in Nov 16 scans showed the disease to be stable.
Unfortunately this didn’t last long, January this year scans showed activity again in the spine and also further scans revealed a spot on his lung. Scott has now been accepted onto a trial in Newcastle with a combination of Chemo for 5 mths along with the trial maintenance pill. If this is not successful, further treatment is available which the family would have to cover the costs.
Scott is the most inspirational, courageous & bravest young man I have ever met. The last 4-5 years has been the most challenging and extremely difficult time for him and all his family, he has lost all his youth years, watching all his friends play the sport he so loved and go out every weekend which is where he should be and you never hear him moan, through all his pain, he has been the one who has got us all through it all and he is still fighting..
We have a team of 8 planning to carry out the Ten Y Fan Challenge in May in order to raise money to help the family with any treatment Scott may need.
