Story

When Ian passed away so suddenly and unexpectedly in December 2024, we knew almost immediately that we wanted to honour him by creating a lasting legacy in his name.

Ian was a huge advocate for encouraging young people to get involved in sport, and from that, the idea for Ian’s Trust was born — with the aim of providing support through sport.

Although our application for official charitable status with the Charity Commission is still being processed, we made a fantastic start with fundraising last year and are now ready to raise awareness, build momentum, and begin making a real difference.

With this in mind, my dear friend Kerry Houghton suggested that we challenge ourselves with something a little outside our comfort zone, in the hope of encouraging you lovely people to support us and help raise funds for such a worthwhile cause.

So, on 12th June, Kerry and I will be taking part in the Great North Swim, swimming one mile across Lake Windermere.

The water temperature may be on the chilly side, but we’ve been preparing over the past few weeks by braving some of the Lake District’s deepest — and equally freezing — waters. And I don’t mind telling you… it was bloody freezing!

As the challenge draws closer, we’re feeling a mixture of nerves and excitement, but we’d be hugely motivated by the support of our wonderful friends, family and colleagues through sponsorship. People have said we’re either very brave or a little crazy — I suspect there’s probably a bit of truth in both. 😬

A little more about Ian’s Trust:

Ian’s Trust is dedicated to inspiring, nurturing and supporting young people through sport, helping them build confidence, self-belief and opportunities for growth.

The charity aims to support young people who have the desire, ability and potential to participate or excel in sport but face barriers such as financial hardship, limited access to facilities or coaching, or a lack of emotional and practical support.

Funds raised through donations, sponsorship and community events will be used to support individuals, grassroots sports clubs and community groups through grants, equipment, training opportunities, coaching and mentorship.

By removing barriers and creating opportunities, Ian’s Trust hopes to help young people discover a sense of belonging, confidence and achievement through sport, enabling them to reach their full potential both on and off the field.

Thank you so much for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page, and for any support you can give — every donation, however big or small, will help us continue Ian’s legacy and make a meaningful difference to young people’s lives. ❤️
