Weʼve raised £5,040 to assist local healthcare professionals and charities help people like me to beat cancer and get fighting fit again.

    Lincoln, United Kingdom
Funded on Wednesday, 30th November 2016

    Story

I want other local people and Service personnel to get the same chance as me which is why we’re raising money for them at RAF Coningsby.

I knew people who had cancer, but never thought it would affect me until I was diagnosed with an invasive cancer which had spread.  How would you feel receiving such news? For me, the feeling of disbelief was quickly replaced by a fear of the unknown.

I was quickly referred for treatment at Lincoln Hospital and the staff there have given me so much excellent treatment and support.  Through their care, and the support of charities like Macmillan Cancer Support, I soon discovered I was not alone.

I want others in our local community and Service families to benefit from the quality of support I have received as well, a lot of which is provided through non-NHS sources. To make that happen we’re going to be doing a charity event at RAF Coningsby to help raise money for cancer support, starting with a Typhoon Pull (all 14 tonnes of it) on Fri 9 September 2016.

The money we raise will be divided equally between:

    Lincoln Hospital Breast Unit

Queen’s Medical Centre Paediatric Oncology Dept who supported a colleague's young son, Zac

Macmillan Cancer Support, Lincs who will use the money to support local families within our community that RAF Coningsby is a part of

    St Barnabas Hospice

I’ve worked in HR all my life and supported lots of people with a diagnosis of cancer, but my own diagnosis made me realise how little I really knew. I hope our Cancer Awareness Day on 9 September will help show how improving understanding can give us more control and remove so much of the fear.

I do hope you are willing to be a part of this – please share my page and make a donation. Everything helps and you’ll be playing a vital role in helping others with a diagnosis of cancer get fighting fit again.

This is just the beginning and I will keep you updated with news of the event and how the funds are spent.

    Many thanks

Well we did it folks! We broke the £5k target with some great fundraising events. As I end the majority of my active treatment in just over a week from now, I find myself truly humbled by your generosity in time, energy and money. My hope is the money raised will help others travelling this journey find hope and support through the 4 organisations who, along with my family, friends, colleagues and even people I did not know before, have given me so much encouragement and support along the way.

Last night's event 'An Evening with the Typhoon Display Pilot, raised a staggering £1500 towards this cause. The ticket donations amounted to £920 and the Raffle - from combined online & offline donations - amounted to an amazing £542! This was rounded up by an additional donation of £38 from Craig Sluman to achieve £1500 overall instead of £1462. Many thanks to the generous people who came along and for their engagement. Also to Mark Long for making the event possible. £920 from Jumblebee should transfer soon and bring the target even closer!
