Story

Last September a good friend of mine, Pete Caine, had an innocuous accident which left him with a life changing injury. Something as simple as a trip left him paralysed from the neck down. Since then has been in the spinal unit at the Princess Royal Hospital in Sheffield.

His family are desperate to get him home with them when he is well enough but certain things have to be in place before that can happen.

Therefore on September 24 I'm running the Sheffield 10k with the aim of raising as much money as possible.

Please read his grandson's story.....

Leo's Story

My name is Leo. I am 4 years old and I would like to share the story of my grandpa - Pete Caine, he lives in Rotherham with my mommar.

My grandpa is my bestest friend and we did lots of fun things together. He would take me to Clifton Park and he would help me ride my bike and push me on the swings. We would go on the train and tram together.

Grandpa would take me to Rugby Tots every Sunday morning, one of grandpa's hobbies was watching Rotherham Titans play Rugby, he would go to all the home games and some away ones with his friends 'The Jersey Boys' they would also sponsor a player every season. Grandpa enjoyed lots of sports, he played badminton, cricket and when he was younger he played football.

The most favourite thing I loved doing with grandpa is he would put me on his shoulders and we would play 'Giraffe's'. He also took me to Butlins where we had lots of fun watching Peppa Pig and Thomas The Tank Engine.

Grandpa had recently retired so he could spend more time with me and mommar. In September 2022 grandpa joined Rotherham United Community Sports Trust to to take part in a walking football group, so he could keep fit and also socialise with other people, whilst taking part he tripped and fell and our lives changed forever. He spent 14 weeks in critical care unable to breath, he was put on a ventilator and put in an induced coma. During this time, we learnt he was paralyzed from his shoulds down. He is currently in the spinal unit at Sheffields Princess Royal Hospital where he continues to receive round the clock care. Over the next few months we are hoping grandpa will be able to come home, this will be a very lengthy process in which so much needs to be in place, a full house extenstion, specialist medical equipment, carers 24hrs a day, garden adaption and an adapted van so my mummy can take me and grandpa out.

Myself and grandpa will never be able to do the things we used to, but I hope he can have the best life possible and be able to watch me grow. To enable my family to get grandpa the best equipment and facilities I would like to raise money. Hopefully with your help and kindness I can make this happen. Thank you for taking the time to read about 'My Grandpa's Story'

Love Leo xx
