    Story

    Hi my name is Amy

Kevin is writing this for me as i have quadraplegic cerebral palsy and am a wheelchair user.

I think disability families need to do things together!!!!! But sometimes it's just not possible. This makes me sad.

I've been lucky my family and friends do try to remove any barriers we can. I want to do that for other families.

I would like to set up a wheelchair cycling group in Wakefield, where families with a mum, dad, son, daughter, brother, sister family members in a wheelchair doesn't feel or get left out.

    BUT i need help!!!

My stepdad hires an ageing wheelchair accessible bike in Wakefield Park to take me and some of my physically disabled friends cycling. They love it and so do I when all i can see and hear is my friends screaming and those that can't talk smiling. My friend Rob shouts "it's fantastic" everytime we go!!

But there is a problem there is only one bike! So when we all get together it's on with one wheelchair then off and on with another. It wastes soooo much time and everyone only gets short rides.....they deserve more!!!!!

So my family have bought a bike for me, it's the one on our page. It's in Holland so Kevin and our friend Gavin are going to collect it and ride it back the 150+ miles from Amsterdam via Hull where me and my friends will take turns to jump on and off all the way home (75miles) I said to Kevin "it's easy! you can walk!" with that grin i give him when i really want something doing!

The bikes are expensive to buy in the UK (£4000+) so I am asking people to sponsor my ride so we can go back to our friends in Holland and buy a second bike i want to donate to the wheelchair cycling club we want to start in Wakefield.

Of course I want to share my own bike with friends but a second Van Raam, together with the one in the park will mean more smiles more screams and we can make it happen for families yet to share the thrill and excitement of wheelchair cycling.

    Thankyou

    Love Amy

Hi all Thankyou for your continued support.......Amy used her bike on Friday and visited Wakefield town centre!!!! She caused loads of interest in her bike and drew quite an audience of supporters as she basked in the sunshine amongst the fountains in the Bull Ring. We are slowly moving towards our target BUT after Friday we are more convinced than ever that this will be life changing for so many "wheelchair" families in the Wakefield Area. Look out for us on a street near you!!!!! You can't miss us and Amy's amazing smile. xxx

Amy enjoying riding a bike made me think about how great it would be for other families to do the same. I supported disability sports for most of my life and since Amy came into my life i have realised how it prevents families sharing some things. Cycling should be for all!!!!
