Story

My name is Kim and I am taking part in the Barnstaple Half Marathon on 24th September 2017 to raise much needed funds for Headway North Devon a local unfunded charity in Barnstaple which offers help and support to the people of North Devon who have suffered and are affected by an acquired brain injury.

Headway North Devon (HND) Charity No 1048722 was founded by a local resident of Barnstaple who, through his work as a fireman, became aware of a need for local support. Acquired brain injury can happen without warning to anyone at anytime and the devastating consequences are life changing and far reaching and affect the whole family.

HND meet weekly, on a Tuesday at the Salvation Army Hall in Barnstaple. The charity have their own mini bus which is the life line for clients to access the group. Although affiliated to Headway UK, HND is independent and receives no funding and is totally reliant on the good will of the people of North Devon who raised funds and donate so generously through fundraising activities and events

The group have an army of volunteers with whom HND would not be able to operate. They give their time to support the clients through their many challenges; encouraging re-engagement with social skills, brain training activities, support to access services for further neurological rehabilitation within a supported, encouraging and non judgmental environment.

During the Tuesday group a hot meal is supplied to all clients, again prepared by one of the army of volunteers, for some of our members this may be the only opportunity of a social gathering and forms a very important part of the day.
