Story
This year, five of us are climbing Mount Kilimanjaro to raise £17,500 to help make birth safer for mothers and babies in rural Maasai communities in Tanzania.
In some of these communities, the nearest medical facility can be hours away. When labour begins, women often rely on the support of a trusted Traditional Birth Attendant — someone from their own village, someone they know, someone who has helped bring generations of babies into the world.
These women are deeply respected and play a crucial role in their communities. But too often, they are working without access to updated education, practical guidance, or basic resources that could dramatically improve outcomes.
And when something goes wrong during childbirth, it can happen quickly.
A small piece of knowledge.
A simple change in practice.
Access to the right resource at the right moment.
These things can mean the difference between life and loss.
Through this challenge, we are raising funds to:
• Provide education and practical training to traditional birth attendants
• Equip rural Maasai communities with guidance and tools to implement safer birth practices
• Support sustainable, community-led improvements in maternal and newborn care including access to clean water
• Help reduce preventable complications during pregnancy and childbirth
Mamatoto means “mother and baby” in Swahili — because their wellbeing is inseparable. When a mother is safe, her baby has a stronger start. When a baby is healthy, a family and a community are strengthened.
Kilimanjaro stands at 5,895 metres. Over several days we will push ourselves physically and mentally — long hours of walking, freezing summit temperatures, and the challenge of altitude.
But that discomfort is temporary.
For many mothers giving birth in remote areas, the risks are not.
Your donation will directly support education and practical change where it matters most — within communities themselves.
If you can give, share, or support in any way, you are helping create safer births and stronger futures.
Thank you for standing with mothers and babies in Tanzania — and for helping turn this climb into meaningful change.
