Story

Thank you for taking time visiting my JustGiving fundraising page.

I'm raising £750 for a lasting memorial for the 10 boys killed in a bothy fire on 16th September 1937.

It would be appreciated to take a few minutes of your time to read this.

In the early morning of 16th September, 1937, a fire broke out in a ‘bothy’ (stone barn) in Kirkintilloch in the east of Scotland.
Inside were ten boys and young men from Achill in Co.Mayo,Ireland, aged from 13 to 23, who had arrived the previous day.
Many of the squad were related to each other, including several brothers and sisters. Tragically, all ten that were sleeping in the bothy were killed in the fire.
There names are:
Thomas Cattigan -19 (Achill Sound)
Patrick Kilbane-18 (Achill Sound)
Thomas Kilbane-16 (Achill Sound)
Owen Kilbane-16 (Shraheens)
John Mangan-17 (Pollagh)
Thomas Mangan-15 (Pollagh)
Michael Mangan-13(Pollagh)
John McLoughlin-23 (Saula)
Martin McLoughlin-16(Saula)
Patrick McNeela-15 (Shraheens)

We have discussed a couple of ideas where the new memorial should be mounted:
1.At the existing wall at Eastside (beside Plumbase)
2. Auld Aisle Cemetery
3. Outside McGinleys Pub (on wall)
Other ideas are welcome.

Once we have raised enough money,we will discuss it with our Local councillors and East Dunbartonshire Council to ensure we do everything by the books.
We will contact memorial suppliers & get their ideas for sizes/prices etc.

You can contact me by email on colmheneghan1@gmail.com for any hints or ideas you may have on the Kirky Legends Facebook

Hopefully, we get this completed in time for the next anniversary in September 16th 2026.

We feel times are tough these days for donations but hopefully after reading this, you can donate as much as possible, even if it's a couple of pound, every little helps.

We will be updating the progress of the donations and news on the Kirky Legends FB group.

Thank you for taking the time to read this.
