How many of you this week will go to Starbucks and buy a coffee AND perhaps a croissant or a cake?
How many of you this week will go and buy some Sushi?
How many of you this week will go to WH Smith and get a chocolate bar?
How many of you this week will get some crisps from the Sandwich man?
How many of you will buy lunch this week when you could have made one at home?
Hurricane Irma has devastated 9 Caribbean territories and is currently battering Florida in the US. May people are left without a home or even basic necessities.
It is estimated that over several Caribbean territories, Antigua, Anguilla, Barbuda, 90% of structures on the Islands are damaged as well as 90% of electricity infrastructure. In St Maarten 70% of houses are badly damaged or destroyed leaving 40,000 living in public shelters. In Barbuda, about 60 per cent of its roughly 1,400 residents have been left homeless. More than half the island of Puerto Rico was without power, leaving more 900,000 in the dark and nearly 50,000 people without drinking water.
Irma has caused more than $10bn (£7.6bn) in damage across the Caribbean so far. People are in desperate need of shelter, aid, water and food and there are now many NGOs on the ground helping support the locals who find themselves homeless and need to start to rebuild their lives.
So my question to you is….. do you NEED that coffee, snack or treat?
I am asking you for one week only to forgo something that you would normally buy and donate that money to our collection.
I appreciate your support on this. Any money raised will be sent to the Charity that, at the end of the week, the Social Committee consider to be using the money directly for those affected by Hurricane Irma..
