Story
We are a group of volunteers who are trying to raise funds to rebuild a primary school in Cambodia, Stung Treng. The school is located on Koh Kroch island based on the Mekong River and is currently providing education to 70 primary school children. Originally the school was constructed out of wood, but due to torrential weather during the monsoon season the building has completely deteriorated. The local people do not have the resources to rebuild the schools themselves, therefore are forced to have their classes outside when the weather conditions are suitable. However, this is putting pressure on the teachers, resulting in the school having to be closed down. Koh Kroch primary school is the only school on the island; if this school closes, children under 10 will have no choice but to cross the Mekong River on unsafe boats to attend other primary schools on the mainland. The majority of the children’s’ parents cannot even afford to pay for their children to cross the river every day. This therefore forces children to miss out on important education, continuing the unfortunate poverty cycle in Cambodia.
We have spent several months teaching and working with the children and local people in the area. We also understand that this situation is of an urgent matter. All the money donated will go directly to rebuilding the school. Currently, there is only 1 water pump on the island and the children have to travel out of the school grounds for drinking water. We therefore plan to construct a 3 classroom building out of cement with available toilets and a safe water pump. We will be extremely grateful for any donations and your support!
