Story
11 year old K'Shonda Hinds from the British Virgin Islands (BVI) was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma, a rare and aggressive form of bone cancer, in December 2017. In a life-saving move, she was rushed to London for emergency treatment on January 5th and had her right leg amputated at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital just 2 weeks later.
K'Shonda is very brave and upbeat. She is facing her treatment head-on but must now remain in the UK with her mother for several rounds of chemotherapy, a prosthetic leg fitting and physical therapy at the University College London Hospital.
Her treatment is expected to last for up to one year and her family is now faced with sourcing funds for her basic living expenses (rent, food, etc) and special mobility equipment while she temporarily resides in the UK.
K'Shonda continues to push herself academically while recovering. She was a grade 6 (last year before secondary) student of the Alexandrina Maduro Primary School in the BVI before the hurricane and most recently a student at Willard Wheatley Primary school.
To say that it has been a challenging time for K'shonda and her family is an understatement. They lost their home and most of their possessions during Hurricane Irma in the BVI last September. Ironically, her father sustained serious injuries from a wooden rafter during the Hurricane, leaving him hospitalised in the BVI and Puerto Rico where he had three surgeries to save his injured foot. He has been out of work on disability since September and has just recently returned to light work. Inevitably all of this has not only caused the family much distress but seriously strained their resources.
Please donate as little or as much as you can and by all means please share K'Shonda's story.
I can personally verify the authenticity of this information and I am happy to be reached via email at sflax@bvi.org.uk. All proceeds will go directly to K'shonda's parents to cover her treatment related expenses.
Thank you!
