KUGB CHARITY APPEAL 2026 - 27
The KUGB is proud to announce the new charity appeal for 2026 - 27 is the HSP (Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia) Support Group.
Throughout the next 12 months, clubs and members across the UK will be raising funds to support this important cause. Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia (HSP) is a diagnosis that covers a range of rare genetic disorders caused by one or more gene mutations. It is a condition of the upper motor neurons, which causes spasticity (muscle stiffness) and paraplegia (paralysis) of the lower limbs.
Typically, those with HSP will have mobility issues caused by progressive spasticity and/or weakness of the leg and hip muscles.
Symptoms can include:
Lower limb weakness
Involuntary spasms / cramps
Increased muscle tone and stiffness (spasticity)
Urinary problems – such as a frequent sense of urgency
A loss of sensation in the feet (sometimes)
Loss of balance
Fatigue
Pain
Lower limb weakness
Digestive and bowel problems
Why We’ve Chosen This Cause:
Gemma Gibson from Kokoro Karate Club was diagnosed with Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia (HSP) in 2025. Despite going through the diagnosis process and facing the uncertainty that came with it, she still achieved her 4th Dan through resilience, determination and perseverance. Receiving the diagnosis brought both answers and new challenges. HSP is a lifelong neurological condition that currently has no cure, affecting strength, mobility and muscle control, with symptoms often gradually increasing over time. Karate has helped Gemma maintain strength both physically and mentally, helping her continue to push through challenges and remain active despite her condition. By sharing her story, Gemma hopes to help raise awareness of HSP and support the work of the charity, which provides support, information and guidance to individuals and families affected by the condition, while also helping to fund research into treatments and, hopefully one day, a cure. Every donation and share will help raise awareness of this rare condition and support those living with HSP every day.
Please donate if you can.
