    Story

Thumper is our Giant Loch Lomond Continental Rabbit. We have had him since he was 9 weeks old and he will be 6 years old on 5th April this year. Thumper is one of 4 rabbits in our family. He shares his garden with Marbles and Honey who we rescued from our local SSPCA 4 years ago after they were found abandoned in a cardboard box up an alley in Coatbridge and his newest room mate is Pipa, who we adopted 2 years ago from a neighbour before they immigrated to Australia. Thumper has been suffering with bad arthritis in his back legs and in particular his knees on both his hind legs for the past 12 months. Most probably exacerbated by suffering a break in his hind leg 3 years ago. Thumper is prone to thumping (hence his name) his hind legs if he sees a cat, a seagull or in fact anything that appears in front of him thats not meant to be there. Heavy stamping on their rear legs can cause breaks and fractures. His condition is treated with pain killers every second day for which he will need to take for he rest of his days. 3 days ago we noticed Thumper was not walking but dragging his back legs beind him. His balance was also off as he kept falling onto his side. He was quickly rushed to our vet and x-rayed. His xray showed no dislocations as we had feared but his knees were really bad, due to the arthritis. All we can do is control his pain with the pain killers. Thumper still has the appetite of a horse and loves his digestive biscuit every morning but simply can no longer use his hind legs. He loves to get out his cage every day and run about the garden on his weed patrol. Sadly he can no longer do this, so we have looked into getting him a wheelchair to get him mobile agian. Wheelchairs are made for dogs and cats and due to his large size he is suitable for a small dog wheelchair. A wheelchair would allow him to still get out his cage and run about the garden with Marbles, Honey and Pipa, even if its only for a couple of hours each day.
