Story

Myself and 6 other student nurses have been lucky enough to have the opportunity to experience a six-week placement in March 2019 overseas in Ghana, Takoradi. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity, and as well as experiencing the diverse culture, we will have the chance to provide medical resources to hospitals and villages.

WHAT WILL WE BE DOING?

We will be providing free healthcare Monday to Friday as part of our placement hours. On our days off we have organised to volunteer within the local community; this will involve working at local schools and orphanages. HIV/AIDS accounts for 18,000 deaths each year and 160,000 children have lost one or both parents to the disease. This is one of many reasons we have chosen to provide healthcare in Ghana.

We will be experiencing new clinical environments, learning how local staff treat advanced conditions with limited resources and high patient volumes. This opportunity would boost both our personal and professional development within our nursing degree. We will not only be providing resources for the hospitals in Takoradi, but also expanding our learning on global healthcare and nursing practises around the world.

HOW WILL WE USE THE DONATIONS?

As student nurses, our course is very full on, working three 6-week placements a year. Alongside theory studies this offers us a small amount of time to earn the amount required for this opportunity. This is why any donation towards this experience would be greatly appreciated.

Your money will:

• Fund our elective programme, including qualified mentors to ensure we are gaining the most from our experience

• Pay for medical resources for the local hospitals in Takoradi

• Allow us to provide healthcare within the villages, for those unable to pay for hospitals

• Pay for clothing, toys and electronic devices for schools and orphanages

Thank you very much - Lucy
