Story
In August 1945 three-hundred mostly-orphaned child Holocaust survivors arrived at Windermere in the English Lake District. Refugees, they had come directly from a concentration camp in Czechoslovakia. Collectively they have become known as the Windermere Boys or Children.
The Lake District Holocaust Project is a charity that tells the Windermere Children's story - working closely with the survivors and their families - to help combat racism and intolerance in the UK and beyond. LDHP have done this through a website (www.ldhp.org.uk), a permanent exhibition at Windermere Library and by acting as consultants on film and books.
In 2020 Tom Palmer published a children's novel - After the War - about the children. The book has already been shortlisted for several book awards and was longlisted for the Carnegie Medal. Without the help of LDHP, Tom would not have been able to even begin the book.
Tom - and his friend, Simon, a headteacher - would like to repay Lake District Holocaust Project by raising £5000 so that LDHP can continue their work with future generations. The two men will travel in the footsteps of the Windermere Children, by cycling, canoeing and running the children's first journey in England, from Carlisle airport to Windermere. They will:
* cycle 30 miles from the airport to Ullswater
* canoe 10 miles up Ullswater
* fell run the 15 miles (and 1000 metre climb) from Ullswater to Windermere
They will do this on a single day on 14th August 2021, the 76th anniversary of the arrival of the 300 children.
Please help Tom and Simon raise £5000 so that LDHP can continue their work.
