Landport Community Cafe has been running for 4 years in Lewes, providing meals on a ‘pay as you feel’ basis. We‘re part of the Neighbourly scheme collecting surplus food from supermarkets, including Aldi in Lewes and M&S in Haywards Heath. We’re all volunteers and the financial donations we receive allow us to buy extra ingredients to turn surplus food, otherwise bound for landfill, into tasty meals for our community.

We were able to quickly adapt in 2020 allowing us to continue through the pandemic, by recruiting extra volunteers to safely deliver meals and as a result we have cooked and delivered an incredible 6000+ meals to cafe regulars and the wider community including those unwell and isolating or shielding. We also delivered meals to ITU and Theatre staff at PRH in Haywards Heath, local sheltered housing and provided ‘free school meals’ to local children.

We will continue to deliver whilst we are unable to open our doors, so this page allows people to make an anonymous ‘pay as you feel’ donation for their food. It also allows people to make a solidarity donation to cover a meal for somebody else.

The next project in the works is our Community Cook Book containing our most popular recipes as voted for by those who’ve eaten the food over the years! The recipes use affordable and often store cupboard ingredients as well as giving you ideas for how to ’use up’ food thats about to be wasted. It will also include nutritional information. This book is being made available for free to all households across Lewes District currently in receipt of food bank parcels as well as to community food stores. For everyone else and to support the project the book will be available at a ’pay as you feel’ cost. Our suggested donation is £5.
