    Story

I created this page to fundraise for the charity Project Trust, which supports young children is Asia, Africa and Latin America. They train and send young volunteers overseas to teach English, Maths and Science or support the community as a social care worker. If I can achieve my fundraising target, I will be teaching and working with children in a school in Malaysia, for 8 months. I am hoping to make a positive impact on the children and the community, by developing their English skills. I will also support their creativity and love for sports through teaching and organising after school clubs and activities. All money raised is going directly towards the charity Project Trust and will be spend on supporting and training volunteers to teach in the schools, as well as develop and support the schools and projects oversees with supplies, facilities and donations.

    WHO AM I?

I am Lara, 18 years old and I just finished studying the International Baccalaureate at Truro College. As part of this I took the subjects: English Literature, Maths, German, Physics, Psychology and Art. After my gap year I am hoping to study Architecture at University. I love to read, draw and travel. I enjoy exploring new cultures and meeting new people.

Coming back from a college trip to South Africa and Swaziland last summer (where the pictures in my profile where taken), I was sure that I wanted to travel in my gap year and do something worthwhile, not just for me but also for other people. So, I decided to apply to Project Trust.

After an intensive selection course on the Isle of Coll, I have been selected to represent Project Trust in Malaysia for 8 Months.

    WHAT IS PROJECT TRUST?

Project Trust is an educational charity, which has been sending young volunteers overseas to long term voluntary placements in Asia, Africa and Latin America since 1967.

This charity organises teaching, social care and outward-bound projects, and offers training and support to their volunteers before, during and after the placement; to maximise the educational value of their experiences as well as the positive effect they have on their project and host community.

    WHAT WILL I BE DOING?

Malaysia is a country in South East Asia. It's known for its beautiful beaches and rainforests. Due to the trading history of the country, the Malay culture is extremely diverse; influenced by Indian, Chinese and European culture.

After my training course, which will educate me on the Malay culture and train my teaching skills, I will spend 8 months, teaching English to students in primary and secondary schools in Malaysia. Also, I will be organising and running extra-curricular activities, for the students in their spare time, such as art and sport clubs etc. I am hoping to make an impact on the children, supporting their English skills and help them gain confidence in speaking English.

    FUNDRAISING?

To support Project Trust as a volunteer I need to raise £5,500. To be able to partake in this inspiring project, I will have to reach this fundraising target by November 2018.

To achieve this target, I have planned and organised fundraising events and projects such as bake sales, BBQs and coffee morning. I also work in a B&B and take on local jobs as much as possible, to raise the donations.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read my page.

Any donations, no matter how small, would be greatly appreciated. All money raised is going directly towards the charity project trust and will be spend on supporting and training volunteers to teach in the schools, as well as develop and support the schools and projects oversees with supplies, facilities and donations.
