Story
Umunthu Foundation (UMUFO) is a Malawian Non Governmental Organisation (NGO) that provides free holistic HIV Services as well as human rights advocacy, in rural Blantyre, Malawi.
Over the last 10 years UMUFO has received funding and partnership support from Avert that has enabled us to grow into a solid trusted community organisation serving the people of Blantyre. As our partnership with Avert now comes to an end we are busy looking at new ways to widen out our income and look at new ways of raising money. One of our biggest priorities is securing the salaries for vital staff positions that will ensure we can continue providing HIV testing and treatment services. We want to raise £5,500 to cover two such staff – 1 HIV Testing Counsellor and 1 HIV Treatment Health Worker.
Like myself, many of you will have been part of the UMUFO journey and family in various ways and had the pleasure of watching it develop and grow into a reputable organisation that is a lifeline for the communities of Limbe, Bangwe and beyond. If you are just joining the journey now, it's not too late as UMUFO hopes and plans to continue and expand its great work.
Last year 14,566 people were tested for HIV by UMUFO HIV Testing Counsellors.
While this year at UMUFO head office clinic, 914 are currently registered and receiving life saving HIV treatment called ART.
UMUFO serves a community that is impacted by poverty, without these clinics many people would struggle to access the right HIV health care in a timely manner. Great progress is being made to reduce new cases of HIV and getting more people who are HIV positive, on treatment. We want to keep this momentum going.
Even though we are going through a time of some uncertainty we feel confident that there are many new opportunities to embrace and with your support we can manage this transition effectively.
