Story
Hi all, my name is Laura Runciman, I’m 19 and currently studying at the University of Stirling.
I’m running the Stirling 10K in memory of two people that have a special place in my heart, with the aim of raising some money for the Margaret Kerr Unit of the BGH Melrose.
Those two special people are Darren Ainslie affectionately known as Daz and Kathleen Runciman known by many as Kath but to me she was simply Granny.
For as long as I can remember Daz had been coming to Huntington to do the lambing taking two weeks holiday from his day job, he worked alongside his dad John in the lambing shed. Lambing is one of the busiest times of the year on the farm and can also be one of the most stressful. However, I could always rely on Daz to have a smile on his face. It didn’t matter how depressing the weather was and often it was bad or how many problems there were Daz would still be smiling, having a joke and making everyone laugh. He had the ability to always lift the mood no matter what! Hands down Daz remains the happiest person I have had the pleasure of knowing. Sadly on the 17th January 2017 Daz lost his short battle with cancer.
Six months later on the 17th June 2017 I lost Granny. She will be remembered for a variety of reasons, she was one of lifes ‘feeders’, you would always find her in the kitchen either making meals for the family or baking for her beloved WRI or a charity fund raising table top sale, goodness knows how many gingerbreads she made! I miss her dearly and I can‘t tell you what I would give to have one last hug from her.
The Margaret Kerr Unit provided much needed supportive and loving care at a time that both Granny and Daz needed it and so I would like to give back to such an amazing place. For those unfamiliar with the unit and it‘s wonderful work, it is a purpose built specialist pallative care unit at the Borders General Hospital, Melrose in the Scottish Borders. The unit hosts 8 lovely rooms with a beautiful garden area. The unit is attended by a dedicated team of care proffesionals who provide round the clock care.
My race takes place on the 9th Spetember 2018, I am well into my training now and I hope I can complete my 10k in a good time. However, I am really doing this to honour Granny and Daz and raise as much as I can for a fantastic service.
I would be so greatful if you would support me in my efforts, any amount greatfully recieved and very much appreciated.
Thank you all so much, wish me luck!
