Story
Climbing is the greatest thing to have, been convinced, to try by my friend Mark and most of my early exploration at Oakwood Climbing Centre in Bracknell.
2024 looks pretty exciting with World Cup/Championships that I will need to self-fund - with a decision to include Para-Climbing in the Para-Olympics set to be made in the near future hopefully and funding then flowing in.
I have never been in a position able to afford coaching and I can struggle to afford gear and attend all UK comps we have but I am not doing too bad.
My world cup best is 10th and my World Championship best is 7th. It's not been plain sailing, I switched classification in 2022 from RP1 to RP2 which was a blow. I couldn't even pull onto one of the RP2 qualifying routes and my future in a sport I loved seemed to be in crisis.
Classification in 2023 saw my return to RP1 and a review date of 2027 was set which was epic!
RP stand for Range and Power and there and 3 classifications within. It signifies there is limited range and power recognized in a certain amount of limbs. RP1 being two or more.
My Brain Injury is acquired and occurred walking home from school aged 12 when I was hit by two cars. Unconscious arriving in hospital, I was put into an induced coma for 5 weeks, apparently they tried after four to bring me out unsuccessfully.
I experienced paralysis from the neck but gradually regained the movement in my torso and limbs. I could not speak either. I had a year of home schooling and was covering the basics of the alphabet, numeracy and spelling.
My left side exhibits spasticity and hypertension, I had to learn to use my non dominant hand and about eight years later found owing to the deliberate and arduous control and marking it resulted in some accuracy drawing now my other passion.
