Story
I am going to Trek from Lukla to Everest base camp and back to raise awareness of unnecessary plastic packaging as well as other sorts, the waste created as a consequence and the impact on the environment and the earth as a whole.
Plastic is one of the worst culprits with over 300 million tons being produced every year and around half of that being for single use, resulting in 8 million tons being present in our oceans today (plasticoceans.org) this is just not ok!
There are many great innovative companies creating biodegradable and reusable materials but does it go far enough? Its certainly an amazing start but is it soon enough? There will be many questions I will be asking myself as well as others about how we see the world and how we move forward to make a positive change for the future of Mother Earth.
Everest is one of the many wonders of the world and humans are leaving a trail of destruction in their pursuit for adventure and greatness, China has closed off their side of the base camp to tourists indefinitely as a result. Human waste and camping equipment as well as food and drink garbage is having a huge impact in the mountains and polluting the water source. livescience.com (How much trash is on the mount Everest) is a great article of the real problems facing the Sagarmatha national park.
In May/April 2020 I will fly to Kathmandu stay 1-2 nights before flying out to Lukla 2860m to begin my 12-14 day Trek through the famous Namche Bazaar and finally reaching Gorak Shep at Everest base camp 5364m above sea level, I will be documenting the journey and using as much reusable and sustainable supplies as possible on the trip, any rubbish I have will be bought back with me and recycled.
The money raised will go towards the flights, accommodation and supplies needed to complete my journey, I would also like to buy a reasonably good quality camera to film the journey. Any funds left over will be donated to the Sherpa and porter communities.
I will be as frugal as possible and buy used items and look for the most ethical trekking company that use fair practices.
Over the next year I will be organising clean ups in my local community such as beach cleans and local parks to work for the money donated.
Please help me achieve my goal and support me to make a difference.
