Story

On Sunday 12 May 2024, many members of the Uni of Leeds Men's and Women's Lacrosse Clubs are attempting the Leeds Half Marathon in memory of our former member and friend, Talvin Khaira.

All funds raised will be put into our Talvin Fund, our club charity in his honour which has so far raised money for the L3 Ward at Leeds General Infirmary hospital, and will continue to support various related causes close to Talvin and his family's hearts.

The Men's and Women's Lacrosse Clubs have jointly decided that the money raised from this JustGiving page will be used to support the incredible work done by Leeds Marrow society and their parent charity, Anthony Nolan.

Every 14 minutes someone in the UK is diagnosed with blood cancer, and stem cell transplants can be potentially life-saving operations that are only possible through the work that Marrow and other groups do.

Leeds Marrow and Men's Lacrosse have kept a valuable partnership in recent years, regularly visiting our training sessions to collect new sign ups. We really want to recognise and support the ongoing work that Leeds Marrow do all over campus to raise awareness for this cause.

Talvin was a much-loved member of the Men's Lacrosse Club, and contributed the roles of 2nd team goalkeeper and social secretary. His distinctive sense of humour and unwavering enthusiasm are two qualities that stood out to many of us, and have left a huge impact on our clubs one year on from his untimely passing in March 2023.

Talvin himself was a registered organ donor, a choice which went on to save multiple lives after he passed. He was also signed up to the stem cell register through this society connection, making this cause a natural fit as a beneficiary of his fund.

The Leeds Half Marathon is a huge event and our clubs have decided this year to give it as big a go as we can with 22 members competing to support this cause! All shares and donations are hugely appreciated and mean the absolute world to us.
