Story
Our fundraising was set up by Sarah, Amy and Ben to provide schools and children in Leeds with access to a range of diverse books covering race, religion, mental health, LGBTQ+, disability and more to educate children on inclusivity, equality and diversity.
Where to start?
There are so many incredible books out there however we needed to start somewhere.
Like many of you reading this, we were shocked and saddened by the recent events in America, which led to the brutal death of George Floyd. As white people living in the UK we prided ourselves on our anti-racist stance, challenging racism whenever I saw or heard it.
However, the last few weeks have taught us that that isn‘t enough. In order to help, support and make change for the BAME Community we need to do more. We need to educate ourselves, have uncomfortable conversations and vow to do what we can to support change.
The first step in the fight for racial justice is to educate. That is why we are starting our fundraising efforts with the aim of providing all of the Secondary Schools in Leeds with multiple copies of the excellent anti-racist book “Why I‘m No Longer Talking to White People About Race“ by Reni Eddo-Lodge. Every pound you donate will help to get free copies of this award-winning book to teenagers in Leeds.
We hope to then be able to expand the project to appropriate books for primary schools and to cover a wide range of areas such as race, religion, LGBTQ+, disability, age.
