I've raised £1200 to help train new volunteers to lead Shared Reading groups in Leicestershire

New volunteers attend the excellent Read to Lead course run by The Reader charity and this costs £580 for each volunteer. We want to be able maintain our existing groups and set up some new ones, and for this we need to train new volunteers.
Leicestershire Shared Reading is a voluntary organisation set up to support a network of shared reading groups based around Leicestershire. In a shared reading group a trained volunteer reads stories and poems aloud, and encourages the sharing of thoughts and experiences.
“Reading group has taught me a lot, not only in English, but local culture, customs and humanity. It made me feel welcomed in this country. “
Our free, drop-in groups are open to all adults, but are particularly valuable for those who are isolated or lonely. Many of the people who attend find it a welcome break from lives that can be difficult because of illness, caring responsibilities or simply loneliness, and find it a good way to meet new people.
“I value the weekly shared reading group and would greatly miss this lifeline if it ceased being.”
Our groups meet every week in libraries in Coalville, Glenfield, Hinckley and Wigston, and we also have groups which meet online, using Zoom. You can find out more about our groups at our website.
