Story

Thanks for taking time to visit my Justgiving page.

This June I will be attempting a 50 mile walk around the beautiful Gower Peninsula along the Welsh Coastal Path. I will be starting in Crofty Penclawydd around 3am and finishing at Swansea Marina around 9pm (18hrs) all in aid of my Mother who has battled Kidney disease all her life.

I will be fundraising for both Singleton Hospital Ward 11 and also the Renal Outpatients Ward at Morriston Hospital and the money raised will be split 50/50. Both departments have played a special role in her recovery and on going support over the years and it only feels right to help the two.

My mother was lucky and very fortunate to recieve a 'Gift of life' back in 2004 and to this day is doing very well all because of the hard work of the NHS.

Around 3 million people in the UK have Chronic Kidney Disease. Every day 20 people in the UK will develop kidney failure. There are around 1,000 children with CKD in the UK.

In 2018 my mother was also diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma. She went surgery to remove a large tumour in her stomach and followed up with 6 months Chemotherapy. Did you know around 13,900 people are diagnosed with NHL each year in the UK, which makes it the 6th most common type of cancer in adults.

Lymphoma is a blood cancer that forms tumours in the lymphatic system. The lymphatic system is a network all around your body an important part of your immune system aka your defence system, which is made up of lymphatic vessels and some of our organs. Lymphoma occurs when white blood cells (infection fighting cells), called lymphocytes, grow out of control. The affected lymphocytes build up, forming lumps, which are commonly found in your neck, armpit and groin.

High Grade NHL refers to lymphoma that usually grows faster and is more aggressive than others. People with high-grade lymphomas are often more likely to be treated successfully and stay in remission than people with low-grade lymphomas. Most young people have high-grade lymphoma.

We watched our Mam battle with NHL for a very long time and the staff at Singleton Ward 11 were fantastic therefore I would like to give something back in a way to say thank you. Luckily for us, my mother Chemotherapy was successful and is fit and healthy and doing good.

Also the on going support at Morriston Renal department has been fantastic, the care and support she has received since 2004 has been excellent and is the reason why she is still here and enjoying life.

Thanks for the support
