Story

This September I will be taking on the challenge of climbing Mount Kilimajaro, which at 5,895m is the highest mountain in Africa and one of the seven summits. I am using this opportunity to raise money for a cause extremely close to my heart. In September 2016, my good friend Zoe’s husband Carl had a motorcycle accident and suffered a severe spinal cord injury that has left him permanently paralysed. Carl lost 75% of feeling and movement in his body, which brings on many secondary complications. Zoe and Carl have spent the past 2 years rebuilding their home to make it accessible for Carl, and adapting to the enormous change to their lives. Now, 2 years on it is apparent that due to the severity of his injuries, Carl will need a lot of specialist equipment to make his life comfortable, and at the top of the long list of things he needs is a new wheelchair that is fit for purpose. Carl's NHS wheelchair has already had a broken axel, and had the back support break in two. Carl is a very independent person and he requires a wheelchair that will enable him to have the freedom of movement that he needs in order to do the things he wants to do, and most importantly to continue to be the primary carer for their 4-year-old daughter Jess. My aim is to raise enough money for them to purchase the wheelchair that Carl has chosen, or to at least make a decent contribution towards it! I wish to make it clear that I am not fundraising to pay for the trip to Tanzania, 100% of the money I raise will go to Carl, Zoe and Jess. Thank you!
