Story

This is a very special project inspired by a wonderful, kind man Leigh Joy-Staines whose life was turned upside down 10 years ago when a routine operation went horribly wrong and after 3 months of doctors trying to save his leg, they had to amputate it. Since then he has endured many difficulties with prosthetics and stump infections which have resulted in 15 operations since the amputation.

Leigh was born with club feet in 1981 resulting in 30 Operations before he reached 7 Years. This left him with severe poor circulation and bone structure. His right foot is a very weak foot and is at risk of amputation. Surgeons managed to save it last year but it remains extremely weak and vulnerable. The NHS options are not suitable, several doctors have told leigh he is better off in a wheelchair. Leigh has fought all his life to lead a 'normal' life and worked all his life up until his amputation he refused to take disability benefits or support offered but instead wanted to pursue as normal a life as possible. Being a Dad of 2 young children, a sports lover he is determined to defy doctors reccomendations yet again !! Leigh can only do this with better socket, prosthetics and orthotics to support his other leg.

We are so lucky to have a group of wonderful, fantastic friends who met through business and all helped us in phenomenal ways to establish the charity STEEL BONES which connects, inspires and motivates civilian amputees and their families. Steel Bones has gone from strength to strength putting on celebration events, working with children to create children's books featuring amputees and support other families on a daily basis. Leigh plays a major role in this charity but struggles to participate fully in events and takes a long time to recover following them due to such poor prosthetics and pain in his right foot as the NHS simply will not do anymore to help him.

Please will you support this amazing group of friends to enable Leigh to purchase what he needs to reclaim his strength & fitness. We are doing bag packing, quiz night, pamper fundraiser, running Milton Keynes Marathon & much more
