Story
My son worked for a foundation helping Syrian refugees and I realised that probably the best relief is local, provided in refugee camps, in cities and towns in the Middle East or even in Syria itself, to help these people survive, work and continue education. Most will come back to Syria once the conflict is over, and it will not last forever. So, I have decided to teach these people English as a Foreign Language, which can help them study further, do business and work. I want to go next spring and over the coming months I hope to put some money aside and collect the rest through crowdfunding to support myself for a year in Jordan. If I collect more than expected, I will take my family, who can teach other subjects and skills (medical and artistic; younger son is thinking of taking a gap year), and spend the rest on buying books and equipment for my students. I also hope to share with them my knowledge of cultural heritage to help them see that we basically believe in the same ideas and that they can and should look out for shared values across sectarian divides.
