Story

My name is Niall, I am a dancer and teacher from Hartlepool. I have worked as a professional dancer for the past 10 years after graduating from Rambert, whilst supporting myself with a variety of other work, such as construction, retail, and fitness training.

In August 2020 I was diagnosed with Leukaemia. Overnight, I found myself in hospital, immediately undergoing intensive treatment. I have been unable to work since being diagnosed, being classed as high risk/vulnerable. This was only exacerbated by the pandemic. I was in Spain to start a new job when I took ill and was unable to fulfil the position, leaving me without an employment contract or any viability for support. What was looking to be a year filled with opportunities was turned on its head.

I am at a point now where I am unable to work and therefore unable to meet my basic living costs. There is no help made available for a person in my position in Spain. The healthcare I am receiving is top notch and I have built a great relationship with my doctors here in Spain, but unfortunately I am unable to support myself, especially through these unsafe times.

Since the moment I was diagnosed I decided to not let this disease get the better of me. I have exercised in the hospital: throughout my chemotherapy and all the other treatments that are thrown my way. I’ve managed to keep a level head and remain focused on overcoming the challenge at hand.

This pandemic, and lockdown, have meant the last year has been extremely difficult for so many people. I have decided to help motivate people to stay active, just like I have, in these unprecedented circumstances. Across my social media platforms, I am going to start posting vlogs and short fitness videos to inspire others to push through their issues and stay healthy and happy no matter the hurdles they may be facing. I am going to share the workout plans I have designed for myself, working around the physical restrictions I still have. I will also upload any dance or fitness sessions I may take part in to prove that no matter the obstacles, there is always a way to get back to doing the things you love.

My goal for this year before my diagnosis was to cycle up the mountain I see every day in La Rioja. The same mountain I was staring at each day from my hospital room. Back in August this dream seemed to have been shattered, but by keeping focused, motivated and exercising at home and in hospital (chemo and all) I hope to still achieve that goal of climbing that mountain. I am looking forward to reaching the top, and knowing I have overcome this challenge in all senses.
