Story
Our lives were turned upside down when my wife gave birth at 23 weeks pregnant, our hopes and dreams for a healthy baby were put in the bin. Thanks to the care and support from the nurses and staff at Heartlands Neonatal Unit, we were given hope and our baby was given a chance. We have since been in three different hospitals and a variety of wards, but the first ten weeks at Heartlands will stay with us because of the dedication of the team in critical care. The curtains may be shabby and building old, but the genuine compassion felt throughout is something we have not experienced since. Joel is still in hospital after his fourth bowel operation, trying to get to full feeds and hoping to be home for Christmas. We have had many dark days, but to still have our boy fighting with us is both a miracle and a priceless joy. If we can give a little back to the unit that saved our family, it is only a small thank you that words can not express. You never believe that things can happen to you, but when they do you appreciate the struggles of many families and the undoubtable hard work of units like Heartlands, hidden from everyday life but that need support.
