Story

On the 15th September 2018 Carl Rolands will attempt to summit mount Elbrus in Russia which is the highest mountain in Europe at a height of 5642m (18,500ft) and is one of the 7 worlds summits.

Carl has completed many challenges including trekking 100 miles to the North Pole ,Trekked Kilimanjaro (1 or the world 7 summits) Trekked mount Aconcagua almost 7000m (1 of the world’s 7 summits)

He now wants to take on another world summit, in aid of Liam Stevens.

Mount Elbrus can have brutal weather condition weather near the summit is about -20 but can dip way below that with wind chill can hit -50 and more with fierce winds. The mountain averages 35-40 degree elevations and trekking this for 7 hours a day is a challenge.

The expedition is 11 days to reach the summit and will be sleeping in tents on the mountain.

Liam's Story

Liam was diagnosed with a supersella polycystic astrocytoma tumour when he was 13 years old, he is now 17, since he was diagnosed Liam has undergone 2 years of grueling chemotherapy and 10 weeks of proton beam therapy in America both of which were unsuccessful. The tumour has continued to grow since the proton therapy, putting pressure and damaging his optic nerves. Liam is now almost blind. He underwent surgery in January 2018 to try to remove as much of the tumour as possible, only 50 % was achieved and this has left Liam with a very weak left side, and requiring the use of a wheelchair. The damage to the nerves has also left him with uncontrollable puritus (itching) which causes him great distress. Liam needs constant 24 hour care now, his life is very much changed.

We are hoping any funds raised will go towards improving Liam's quality of life, his mother Mandy gave up her job to look after Liam full time, and money has been a real struggle for the family. Benefits do not cover the specialist equipment that Liam needs, and a little extra in their pocket would make a very tough situation just a little easier, and one less worry.

If you would like to keep up with Liam's progress and learn more amount his journey, you can join his group here, your support means the world to the family. https://www.facebook.com/groups/113728295720069/

Thank you for reading and if you feel you can donate, thank you, so much.

NB: We haven't listed Liam's exact equipment needs here, as they are complex and adaptions to each item need to be made, to suit Liam, but to give you an idea, we would like to fund a wheelchair with some sort of motor to help his mum Mandy, who is struggling to push him in the manual chair provided.

A computer, like the one he uses with his sight care nurses, so he has more to do at home. (research needed to exactly what he could have, but your money will not be wasted)

Proper access to his garden and his beloved fish pond, which he built himself when he was still well enough to do so.
