Story
Cameron James Forster was tragically killed, aged 21, so his estate was generously donated to build an orphanage for the children of Mkushi in Zambia. Cameron was a pupil at Hurst so for a number of years lower 6th formers have visited the orphanage to assist with the building project and to connect with the many children this project is helping. You can read more about this on https://www.facebook.com/Camsorphanageproject
The Itala Foundation Charity school provides an education for around 900 pupils in Mkushi, over half of whom are orphans as a result of the AIDS pandemic. Attending school has given the children some hope of a fulfilled future and now, with the orphanage open, they have somewhere secure to live but the project still has a lot to achieve. I am proud to be able to continue Hurst's association with this project and hope, that by giving some of my time and energy, it will continue to deliver what is needed for the community. I will help with the current building project which includes some long drop toilets, some secure storage space and an office. I will also be sharing language skills with the children. I will face some challenges myself and perhaps my contribution to their daily lives will be small but I know that unless I try, nothing changes.
Trekking along the Zambezi river and wild camping will be an exciting challenge for me so whilst I will be raising some of the funds myself, your donations will help me to take part in this trip, for which I thank you.
